UK Tax Credits - Working Tax Credit & Child Tax Credit

UK tax credits are means tested payments that are based on a persons circumstances and income. There are two types of UK tax credits:

  • Child Tax Credit

Child tax credit has been developed to support families with children and can be claimed regardless of whether the person is employed or not.

Child tax credit is made up of a family element and a child element which are used to determine the amount of child tax credit you will receive. The family element refers to a family that has at least one child, with a higher rate being paid for children under one year old. You will receive the child element for each child in your family.

Child tax credit can generally be claimed for a child up to the 1st September after their 16th birthday or until they are 18 and still in full time education.

You can still claim for child tax credit if you receive child benefit or working tax credit.

  • Working Tax Credit

Working tax credit aids working people on a low income. It provides a top up for employed or self-employed people with additional tax credit available for homes with someone who has a disabilty and for help towards the cost of childcare.

There are many elements of working tax credit that are used to establish the amount you can receive. You must be at least 16 years old to claim and depending on your circumstances you may be eligible to receive additional amounts. For example an extra amount is paid to single parents or extra if you or you partner work over 30 hours per week.
