Premium bonds are a National Savings product, which means they are backed by HM Treasury and is therefore a completely secure investment option. Rather than receiving interest on your investment/ UK savings, a Premium Bond offers the chance to win monetary prizes that you do not have to pay any income tax or capital gains tax on.
For each £1 that you have invested in Premium Bonds you will be allocated a series of numbers. There is a monthly prize draw, with two £1 million jackpots starting from 1st August 2005 and a million other prizes.
The monthly Premium Bond prize fund is determined by the amount of interest gained on the entire value of all eligible Premium Bonds.
Investing in Premium Bonds
Investing in Premium Bonds requires a minimum investment of £100 or if you have a monthly standing order the minimum can be £50 with a maximum investment of £30,000.
Your Premium Bonds go into the prize draw every month until you decide to cash them in which you can do at any time, in full or partially.
Although you must be 16 years old or over to purchase Premium Bonds, it is also possible to invest in Premium Bonds for children.
