Unit Trusts & OEICs (Open Ended Investment Company)

With a unit trust your invested money is pooled with money from other investors to buy stocks and shares, gilts(government bonds) or cash deposits, resulting in a fund of investments. The unit trust fund is divided into equal units. The amount you invest determines the number of units you have.

A unit trust is described as being unwrapped as there are no rules to protect the investment from being taxed unlike an ISA. Although it is possible to invest in a unit trust or OEIC via an ISA, where you can take advantage of a tax-free investment. However the benefit with it being unwrapped is that there is no maximum investment limit or restricted number of funds that you can invest in.

An unwrapped account such as a unit trust can be an option if you have used your entire ISA allocation and want to invest more money.

The unit prices rise and fall according to the performance of the investments in the fund.

OIECs (Open Ended Investment Company)
Similar to unit trusts in that your investment is pooled to buy stocks and shares. However OEICs are structured as companies rather than trusts. Unit trusts are likely to become OEICs eventually.

Both unit trusts and OEICs are described as being open ended because there is no limit to the size of the fund, which can vary depending on supply and demand.

This type of investment is generally thought to have a relatively low risk attached to it as the unit trust or OEIC (open-ended investment company) investment is pooled and spread across a wide range of different investments.

Each unit trust and OEIC(open-ended investment company) has its own fund manager who makes the investment decisions according to the investment objectives of that particular unit trust or OEIC. This can be good for investors who do not have the time or perhaps even the knowledge required to make profitable investment decisions.
