Credit cards have become a part of everday life for many people. However as they have become so popular, there is a greater chance of credit card fraud and theft.

The following is general advice about credit card security and credit card protection.

Skimming
Skimming is where the information on the magnetic strip of a credit card is copied and then used to make a replica card that can used like the original. Skimming has advanced greatly in that cash machines/ATMs are now being used by criminals by fitting skimming machines and cameras that will not only give them access to your account details but also your PIN (Personal Identification Number).

Chip and PIN
Chip and PIN is an attempt at credit card protection, introduced as a way of combatting credit card fraud. Rather than signing each time you use you card, you enter your PIN. As it is more difficult for criminals to get hold of your PIN number it is thought this will help reduce the amount of credit card fraud and increase your credit card security.

What can you do to protect against credit card fraud?

Never keep your PIN numbers with your credit cards and if possible memorise them so that you have no reason to write them down anywhere.

No one other than you should need to know your PIN number, therefore if anyone asks for it, even bank employees, do not divulge it.

Always keep your receipts from any transactions using your credit card so that you can check these against your credit card statements. If anything appears that you are unsure of, you can report it.

If you lose your credit cards of they are stolen, it is esssential that your report it immediately to prevent anyone using them who should not be. Basically this will help avoid anyone spending your money!

Photocopy your cards (both sides) and keep the copy separate from your credit cards. This will be useful should your credit card ever be lost or stolen.
