As well as being able to invest up to £3,600 in a stakeholder pension fund for yourself, you can also invest for your children and grandchildren. By starting a pension scheme early in life for your children, they could have a significantly greater fund than if they had made contributions from their twenties to their sixties!

A children's stakeholder pension could be a good way to make use of the Child Trust Fund that is available to all children born after 1st September 2001.

As with all stakeholder pensions the general rules apply in that money cannot be taken out of the pension until the policy holder is at least 50 years old and before they reach 75 years old. This could be a downfall as they may need the money before that.

After your child turns 50, a tax free sum of 25% of the total pension fund can be used, with the remainder being used as an income for retirement. Again there is the fact that the money will not be available until they are 50 years old to consider.

Alternatively you could consider an ISA which would give you access to the money on your terms.

Another way of saving for your child's future is via a children's savings account. With the introduction of the Child Trust Fund more and more banks are recognising the need for savings facilities for children and are offering more competitive interest rates.
