Self invested personal pensions or SIPPs work the same as personal pensions in that they have to comply to the same general rules regarding contribution limits, the 25% restriction on a tax free lump sum upon reaching retirement and the obligation to purchase an annuity.
The main difference between a SIPP and a personal pension is flexibility - you control the investment, similar to an ISA. So you decide how much you want to invest and where.
Investments can be in the form of things like shares, gilts, investment trusts and cash. The investment can be spread among the different types.
SIPPs were generally for people with larger pension funds due to the higher fees
associated with them. Yet with the advent of online SIPPs, with significantly lower charges, a wider range of people have began using them.
SIPPs are only slightly more expensive than stakeholder pensions, it is just a case of weighing up how much flexibility you want for your investment.

As your SIPP relies on the performance of investments, and there is the risk that you could end up with a smaller pension income than you expected, many financial advisers recommend that you consider other types of investment such as buy to let properties and ISAs in addition. Also it is not a good idea to get all your financial products from the same provider.
