Gilts (gilt-edged securities), also known as government bonds, are issued and guaranteed by the UK government. Gilts are loans to the government that are traded like stocks and shares on the stock market.
There is an agreed rate of interest on a gilt (gilt-edged security) with some interest rates being based on the rate of inflation. This rate is known as the coupon.

Generally gilts have a redemption date which can be set short term (up to seven years), medium term( within seven to fifteen years) or long term (over fifteen years).
A gilt or gilt-edged security is considered to be a relatively low risk investment as there is little chance in a country failing to repay its debts. However as they are traded on the stock market there is the possibility of the value of your investment falling. It is possible though to sell your gilt before the redemption date and take advantage of a rise in the market.
Gilts are referred to as being blue-chip which describes a company with high quality products and services. The company also has a good reputation for making a profit and being able to pay dividends to its shareholders. The term blue-chip is related to blue poker chips, which are the most valuable.
