Financial Spread Betting / Online Spread Betting

A spread is an estimate of a share price, comprised of two prices - the offer price (higher of the two) is for buyers and the bid price is for sellers.

With spread betting, your spread bet is a prediction of whether a market or product value will rise or fall. No product is actually purchased when spread betting, but any profit or loss is calculated by the difference between the price the product is bought at and the price it is sold at.

All profits from spread betting are tax free increasing its popularity together with the fact that online spread betting is now readily available.

A company's current spread is quoted at 120 - 124 and you 'buy' £5/point at 124p. Therefore for every point the quote rises above 124 you make £5 for each. However for each point that the quote falls below 124 you lose £5 for each.

The price quoted then alters with the fluctuating market throughout the day and you decide to take your profit when the quote reaches 130.

To close the spread bet you 'sell' £5/point at 130 resulting in a spread betting profit of £30. The spread bet return is calculated as follows:

(130-124) x £5 = £30

Financial spread betting has become a popular alternative to share dealing but carries with it a significantly high risk of losing some or all of your investment.

Perhaps you are not prepared for the high risk involved with spread betting but are still considering investing your money. Try some of the following investment types:
