Stocks & Shares ISAs (Individual Savings Account)

An ISA (individual savings account) is a tax efficient way of saving your money. Your ISA investment can be in the form of cash, insurance, or stocks and shares and can be a Mini or Maxi ISA.

The stocks and shares component of the ISA is a way to invest in the stock market making use of the tax advantages. An ISA is referred to as being a 'wrapper' account in that there are rules that protect it and enable it to be tax efficient. However this also means that there are limits to the amount that you can invest.

Maxi stocks and shares ISA(individual savings account)
Within a tax year (from April to April) you can invest up to £7,000 in a Maxi ISA, which can be entirely in stocks and shares.

Mini stocks and shares ISA(individual savings account)
The maximum investment in a tax year for a Mini ISA is £7,000 also, however you can only invest a maximum of £4,000 in the stocks and shares component. You are limited to one Mini ISA, of the same component, in a tax year i.e. you cannot have two Mini stocks and shares ISAs.

As a stocks and shares ISA (as the name suggests) relies on the stock market, your investment value can rise or fall according to the performance of the companies your money is invested in.

When considering whether a stocks and shares ISA is the investment for you, as with any investment you should consider how much you can afford to invest and how long this money can be invested. Also you should take into account the level of risk you are prepared to take with your money.
